February is American Heart Month.
Dr. Joy Gelbman, a cardiologist at Weill Cornell Medicine in the city, joined NY1 to give tips on how one can take care of their heart.
Gelbman and the American Heart Association say it is very important for one to know their cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index.
Gelbman and the American Heart Association also suggest knowing risk factors, not smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and managing stress.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women, according to Gelbman.
Heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined. Symptoms for women may be different than symptoms for men. They include feeling sweaty and malaise, or having indigestion.
